DECEMBER 21, 2007:
We gave out baskets and toys today until 1p.m. and then we closed the door and had about 70 people including a lot of children for lunch.  Many of you who have been here will know Don Hector, the tuk tuk driver, he took time off work to come and enjoy himself with us.

The ground was strewn with fresh pine needles which is customary for any celebration here in Guatemala.  One of the women from the San Jorge Sewing group does beautiful cut outs from paper and we had them hung all over the ceiling.

Miguel, the local Veterinarian played Santa Claus and he was great!
The clown had everyone laughing, he did a dance competition, an apple eating competition, lots of games for the adults and the kids.

After cake and ice cream, we had the piñata - this was the first time Aleeya had ever managed to get a piece of candy herself.

We gave the staff their Tamale Baskets, we made them a  little more special, putting a bottle of coca cola ( at their request!) , fruit and candy.

It was a great day, everyone had a lot of fun, Carmen's box arrived after everyone had left.

We also managed to send two people to the doctors, a child whose face seems to have very bad eczema, she was crying with the pain, a woman suffering from stomach ulcers and very weak, we bought medicine for a man who has pulmonary problems, gave money to Lubia to buy her gas and milk for the baby, we arranged to meet a woman tomorrow to buy her medicine, she is to have an operation next month and she needs to take her medication before she is operated on but she cannot afford to buy it and had someone bring a lost dog to the house. Luckily, Miguel the vet - took it with him after he finished playing Santa.

We have the Christmas Party at the orphanage at 9.am. tomorrow and then another one for the 2nd Women's group in San Jorge in the afternoon.

We still have several Tamale baskets to give out tomorrow....
and after that we are closing the door for a week.
My husband, Dwight arrives on Sunday and the girls, Zoe and Aleeya , and I are so looking forward to him being here.
Going to crawl into bed now, Sharon

SAN JORGE SCHOOL UPDATE:
This group really does perform miracles. I only posted last night that we needed to finish the  bathrooms in San Jorge for the  "temporary" school  and this morning we have received an anonymous donation to cover this construction!
!!  Thank you so much to the donor/s who have made this possible.  We have sent a message to San Jorge and they are going to be so excited to find out that they can finish the bathrooms before school starts!

The other wonderful news is for the kitchen in the school in Tierra Linda. It  needed finishing. The school had built the shell of the building from leftovers from the school construction but they ran out of money to finish it.  One of the angels in this group wrote that they would like to do something for Tierra Linda, so they have sent the funds last night to cover the cost of finishing the kitchen, putting in the doors and windows and buying two gas stoves!!

This is just unbelievable news and I am so thrilled to be able to share it with you!
Thank you so much to the wonderful donors that have made these two projects possible.!  Sharon

CHRISTMAS UPDATE:
Well, it certainly has been a busy time here, we have given out a lot of the presents, I am sorry that we do not get a photo of every toy being given out but with over 3,000 toys that makes it a bit challenging.  But I hope that you have the chance to see the toys that you sent down in the hands of one of these very happy children!

We had a great system with the Christmas Tamale Baskets and it was actually easier this year doing the 616 that we have almost finished giving out than it was to do the last year's 215 baskets!   We have a lot more space this year, we have great tables that GAFI donated to us and we had a lot of volunteers. I was especially pleased to see several Guatemalan volunteers here helping.

I hope that everyone gets to see their sponsored student with their basket - Carmen is also putting their photos on the student blog - so you may be able to find them there in the next few days or so.  In some cases the sponsored student did not come with their parent to collect the basket.  The mother either didn't realize that the child had to come , or they were sick, or in some cases they were working.   So if you do not see your sponsored child in the photo -make sure you check the student numbers because sometimes it is the mother with another sibling holding the student number sign.

It has been really busy here, we are all tired but it has been a very joyful busy!
Today we are closing down at 12 noon to have the staff Christmas Party. Staff and their families are invited plus any volunteers that have been working with us.
It seems like we are going to have about 50 people, we have certainly grown since last year!

I know that I have said thank you before for all the donations, all the hard work and all the effort that you have all made to make this Christmas special for the people here but I just want to say it again from the bottom of my heart . I wish that you could all be here to see the joy that you have spread.

Love and have a very Merry Christmas,
Sharon

DECEMBER 20, 2007:
THE REASON WE ASK FOR SHOES.

This young boy from Santa Catarina is wearing his only pair of shoes.

His younger brother did not have a pair.

CHRISTMAS JOY!

We are continuing to distribute the more than 600 Christmas Tamale Baskets to needy families- what a joy it is to be sure that these families will all have enough to eat for Christmas.

We are also continuing to distribute the 3,000 toys to children - it is wonderful to see their faces light up and how much happiness these toys bring.

Thank you once again to everyone who donated to the Christmas Project for the Tamale Baskets and thank you everyone who sent toys or brought down toys.
We gave out toys today to a single mother with five children, she was so excited, her voice started breaking and she told me it was the first time that her children had ever received a gift.  That certainly made all the work worth it.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
SAN JORGE SCHOOL:
I have received a letter from San Jorge school asking for help for the two "temporary"
classrooms.
They have approx. 60 children in the two dilapidated classrooms. They are a long way away from the real school.  The children have been using the toilets that are in the mayor's office.  This has caused a lot of problems.

They formed a committee and started building two toilets that the children can use. If and when the school can ever afford to build two classrooms so that the children can move into the regular school, the toilets will remain and be open for general public use. This would be wonderful because there are no public toilets in San Jorge and during festivals etc it causes a health hazard.

They put the foundations in , they dug the huge hole that will be used as the septic system but they have run out of money and still need to be able to buy the two actual toilets, two sinks, two metal doors , some tubes, some glue and some more cement.  This along with the labor costs and delivery will cost $1,200.US.

The school re-opens on January 15th and the committee is getting desperate to have these toilets finished before that date.

If you would like to give a donation towards finishing these bathrooms, please mark your donation - Construction Program - San Jorge.

DECEMBER 19, 2007:

Yesterday we gave out Christmas baskets and toys in Panajachel.  We

will be continuing all week until Friday.   All the over 600 tamale

baskets are packed and are being given out.  It is such a joy to be able to supply people with food for their traditional Christmas meal.

Thank you to everyone who donated to make these food baskets available to so many people.  Thank you to everyone who sent a toy to bring such joy to these children.

BABY IN NEED OF AN OPERATION:

This precious little 3yr old girl from San Jorge is in need of an operation. She has hip dysplasia and cannot walk without limping.  We have a US. group that will operate on her without charge but it means that she would have to go to the U.S. for 6 months and be in foster care.

We think that this will be very traumatic for this child and family and we would like to raise the funds so that she can be operated on locally.

This child is very small and underweight.  She is photographed with her mother and her four month old brother.

If anyone would like to donate helping this child - please send a donation to our Medical Fund.    Thank you.

THANKS FOR THE SHOES!

This little boy has only one pair of shoes to wear, they are rubber boots and he does not have any socks.  When he came to get his Christmas present we were lucky that Dr. Jennifer was here to dress his wounds. They had become infected and he had to start a course of

antibiotics.   We were able to find a pair of sandals his size and

hopefully now his wounds will heal.

We appreciate all the shoes that we receive as donations. They help so many people. Thank you.

SAN JORGE CHRISTMAS PARTY!

On Saturday we had a Christmas party in San Jorge la Laguna for 215 women and over 500 children.

The clown and Santa Claus came!  The women each received a Christmas tamale Basket and winners of the games received a beautiful mug packed full of candy.

The women had all contributed $2 US to have lunch for themselves and their children.  They presented us with a delicious lunch and quite a surprise for us,  gave us all gifts to show their appreciation for such a great day.

You can see the excitement and joy of the children receiving their presents in these photos. It was a very happy day.

DECEMBER 17, 2007: Christmas Tamale Baskets being handed out. More Photo's on the Main Home Page.

These are the first group of people to receive their tamale baskets for Christmas. They also received a ticket that they have to take to

the butcher's shop in the market and collect their meat.   They do

this beginning on the 22nd if they have access to a refrigerator, if

not they collect it on the 23rd and 24th.    It was a real pleasure to

be able to give out these baskets and we so appreciated all the volunteers who turned up to help today. Thank you!!

Tierra Linda Christmas Party 2007!

Yesterday we had a very joyous day!    Over 300 toys were given out at

a Christmas party in the very small village of Tierra Linda in the Highlands.

The children were so excited , we had a clown who was wonderful, he had everyone playing games and laughing.  We had a mechanical Santa Claus that sang a variety of Christmas songs in Spanish and English.

The children were just fascinated by him.

Then the long awaited moment when Santa Claus arrived!   There was

much pushing and shoving trying to get close to him!

Every child received a present and every woman received a beautiful mug full of candies.

There were so many happy faces!  If you would like to see all the photos please go to http://s198. photobucket. com/albums/ aa178/MayanFamiliesConnection/

Thank you to everyone who sent gifts down, thank you to everyone who brought gifts down with them, thank you so much to the Mayan Families Connection at mayanfamiliesconnection@yahoogroups.com who sent down huge boxes of toys in their "Santa Shipment " and several other shipments through out the year, thank you to all the people who left gifts at the hotels in Guatemala city and Antigua - we could not have done this without all of you!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all.

DECEMBER 16, 2007: Underweight Baby:

This little baby is five months old. The local pediatrician asked if we could help this little one as he is very underweight. The mother does not have enough breast milk and they cannot afford formula. So we have added this cutie to our feeding program and he is now receiving sufficient formula and we hope that he will soon be putting on weight.

If you would like to help buy a can of baby formula , please send your donation to the Food and Milk program.

A School Helps out!

The international school, A.M.A. . Atitlan Multicultural Academy in Panajachel , Guatemala has some wonderful 12th grade students.

They have been raising money selling food every week for the past few months.

They could have used this money to go on a trip or to have a party but instead they put this money towards helping less fortunate children.

They have sponsored one middle school student and three elementary school students to go to school this coming year , Jan. 2008.

Thank you  12th grade A.M.A.!

Ernesto's Wife Sylvia:

Sylvia, Ernesto's wife came to collect food for the family. Ernesto is a paraplegic and is unable to work. Sylvia makes approx. $1.50 US  a day, which is not enough to keep them in food. They are very fortunate to have  a sponsor who provides them with regular food to be able to survive.

Sylvia also collected disposable diapers for Ernesto.

Thank you so much to all the people who help Ernesto and his family survive.

DECEMBER 12, 2007:
Yesterday we unpacked the 600 beautiful mugs that you sent!  They are really beautiful!

We started packing them with candies and wrapping them in cellophane. They are just terrific and the women are going to be thrilled!!   Unfortunately, `1 box arrived broken and another box had a problem with its handles but the people who work here and people who were visiting here took all the ones home that were possible to use - they did not care about the chips and cracks!  The ones without handles will be used for flowers!   There are a few mugs that are not usable and we will give them to a school to use for an art project.

Thank you so much for sending these beautiful mugs - they are just wonderful! Wish you were all here to pack them!

We have almost finished packing all the presents.

We have all the Christmas Tamale Baskets waiting to be packed.  We are going to start on them tomorrow.

Last night we attended a small Christmas party where 100 gifts where given out to some very happy children.   Santa Claus looked glamorous in Suzanne's outfit.

Thank you everyone for helping to make this such a Happy Christmas for so many people! Sharon

EMERGENCY FOOD SUPPLIES.

This mother has seven children, the husband abandoned the family nearly 2yrs ago just before the birth of the son that is photographed.

He is now living with another woman.  He has not given any money to support his children and has been physically abusive with the family.

The eldest daughter, approx 10yrs old had to be hospitalized from a beating from her father. She had asked him for food as the family had none and that was his response.

The mother is illiterate and the only work that she is used to doing is washing clothes by hand.  When she can get this work, she usually earns approx. $3 US per day.  This is not enough to be able to pay the rent and feed her children.

She had not had any work for the past week and the family had no food when she came to us for help.

If you would like to help this family or another family that needs help please send your donation to our FOOD AND MILK PROGRAM.

$47 will feed this family for one week.

DECEMBER 8, 2007: MICRO LOANS GIVEN OUT!

This past week these 15 women ( one not in photograph) received loans of $134 each. These are interest free loans that are given to the women to enable them to enhance their businesses.

A lot of these women make beaded jewelry and this money allows them to be able to buy beads at a wholesale price thus helping them make more of a profit on their work.

Some women will use it to buy thread wholesale for their weavings.

Others sell fruit and vegetables in the market and want to be able to buy as much produce as they can to be able to sell for the Christmas market.

These loans are only small but they help these women enormously.  They are paid back at approx. $13 US a month for a ten month period.

If you would like to help a woman with a micro loan - please mark your donation MICRO LOANS PROJECT.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

These four children were orphaned during Hurricane Stan. They now live

alone with the eldest being 17yrs old.   They are making beaded

jewelry and trying to survive as best they can. They are living in emergency shelter housing.

Through Mayan Families they have now been sponsored to go to school and they are very lucky that they have also received sponsorship for monthly supply of food.  This is what they needed most at their home - they did not have enough food.

They are very, very grateful to their sponsors.   This is a great help

for them and is making life much easier for them.

EMERGENCY FOOD FOR FAMILY.

This mother came to us this week. The children had nothing to eat before they came, there was no food left in the house. She was desperate. Her husband has left her for another woman and he is not giving her any money to be able to feed the children. She is trying to find work but is only able to get occasional work washing clothes by hand. It is not enough to feed the family.

When we gave her this supply of food she burst into tears. She said that she had not seen that much food in a long while.

We have many families that are in need of help with food - if you would like to help them, please mark your donation for THE EMERGENCY FOOD PROGRAM.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Another underweight baby receives a supply of baby formula.

If you would like to help a baby receive a can of formula - please send your donation to BABY FEEDING PROGRAM  - $15 -$20 can supply a baby for a month with milk.

MAYAN FAMILIES HEALTHY PETS: Written by Selaine.

Good morning!

And, what a glorious morning it is here in Panajachel; sunny, breezy, bright and warm! Add to that the successes of Mayan Families Healthy Pets over the last month and one can only smile from ear to ear.

Yesterday, we held the last monthly clinic for this year at Dr. Miguel's office. Taking into account the three stragglers having their surgery today, a total of 36 more animals never have to worry about becoming pregnant or contracting Canine Transferable Venereal Tumors.

Dia de los Perros was a howling (sorry) success! Thanks to the hard work of many local and visiting volunteers, well over 200 people enjoyed a fun-filled day with their canine buddies. Marion and Midge did a fantastic job of gathering a whole host of wonderful prizes for the raffle. Please help us show our thanks by patronizing the businesses list below. They were all most generous!

The Panajachel Firefighters brought by one of their fire trucks for us to use at the grooming booth. No, we didn't use a fire hose on the dogs, but we did tote a bunch of water in buckets. There was a steady stream of doggies for baths, clips, flea treatments and brushing. Couldn't have done it without Anna, Kelly, Juan and the Kelley family!

Dr. Miguel and Elisabeta (aka Silvia) gave 50 rabies and combo shots, helped out with adoptions and signed up 28 animals for the November clinic. Speaking of adoptions, 9 out of 11 lucky dogs found new families during the festivities! Great work!

Thanks to the efforts of Patti and Mikki, and all of those who donated items, the food booth offered a vast variety of baked goodies, yummy sandwiches and tipico drinks. Right next door was Jorinda, who was extremely busy all day painting beautiful dog and cat faces on a myriad of children. She also managed to judge the drawing competition. Thanks, you guys!

Marilena and Juan Antonio entertained the kids with animal tales while the two clowns led them in games and dances. Eze kept the music going and Kira helped me out by translating my Spanglish announcements into something everyone could understand!

The Mayan Families crew that included Sharon, Julio, Juan, Gloria, Roberto, Myner and Zoe watched over the Dalmatian Jumping Room and the gate to ensure that all the dogs had leashes.

The Grand Parade topped off the day with over 25 dogs competing for the prizes given for Best Groomed, Best Behaved, Best Trick, Best Costume and Best in Show. Prizes also went out at the Hot Dog Dunkin' Booth, a very popular activity and cool way to get your dog a special treat!

DECEMBER 2, 2007:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY RYAN:

I just want to share the story of this amazing little boy.   His sister was adopted from Guatemala and he decided to do something great for his 5th birthday.

He asked everyone to bring him money instead of presents so that he could sponsor two children to go to school.   He collected enough for the two sponsorships - $240!

He is now sponsoring two children, #435 Candida and #457 Yessica in honor of his fifth birthday and in honor of his sister.

What an incredible generous spirit he has!  Thank you so much Ryan - we hope you had a very, very happy birthday ....you made two children here in Guatemala very happy, they will be able to go to school this year!

FOOD SUPPLIES FOR A NEEDY FAMILY:

This family receives food supplies twice a month from their sponsor.

The mother is a single mother of five children, she has uterine cancer and is unable to work. She is bedridden most of the time.  The two eldest boys are working while attending school but they do not make enough money to cover food for the whole family.  Before this family had a sponsor they often had only tortillas and salt to eat. The sponsor also provides medical attention for the mother. These children are also sponsored to go to school.  This family is already in a terrible situation but without the help that they receive from their sponsors their situation would be devastating

BABY WITH CLEFT PALATE:

This little girl, Ana is waiting to have an operation for her cleft

palate.   We will be having a group here in January that will be able

to operate on her. But we need help with funds for transportation for the family and expenses for medicines etc.

The white mark on her lip is a little tooth that has come through.

If you would like to help this little princess - please forward your donation to MEDICAL FUND  and note for Ana Cleft Palate.
FUEL EFFICIENT STOVES:

These women were very happy to receive Onil stoves this past week.

These stoves change lives, they take the smoke out of the kitchens and the houses so that it relieves respiratory problems, the stoves use 70% less wood thus cutting down the amount of time it takes to collect wood and the weight of carrying it.  Because there are less loads to carry it reduces the risk of hernias.  The sides of the stove do not heat up and this reduces the amount of children who suffer burns from open fires.

The Onil stoves cost $125 and these stoves have all been donated.

We have a long list of people waiting to be able to receive these stoves.

A STOVE WITH STYLE:

This woman was so happy with the donated Onil stove - she painted it bright red. It is the first one that I have ever seen painted!  It looks great!

UNDERWEIGHT BABIES.

Last Sunday we did a medical clinic in San Andres with the Rotary Club of Lago Atitlan ( in formation) and the Club Metropolis of Guatemala

City.   They brought out many doctors and lots of medicines.

The pediatrician discovered three babies that were dangerously malnourished and underweight for their ages.

She asked if we could take them into our feeding program for malnourished children.

Two of the mothers ( both single mothers) came very early the next morning to get milk for their babies, the third mother has unfortunately, not come  - that was the smallest of the babies and was very malnourished.  She was a very young single mother and we are hopeful, for the babies sake, that she will still come to get milk.

We will feed these babies for at least 6 months and then re-evaluate their situation.

We are very grateful for any donations that we receive towards the "Feediing Program".  If you would like to supply a can of milk for a baby - it costs $16 - these cans should last at least two weeks.

If you would like to give a baby a can of milk  - please send your donation towards the 'FOOD Program" and specify for baby milk.

DONA JUANA.

This poor old lady, 88yrs old fell and broke a bone in her hip.   The

family is very poor and did not have money to be able to seek medical

care for her.   She was crying in bed in pain for a week before the

daughter came to us for help.

We sent her to the clinic and they xrayed her and found that her bone was broken.  Because of her age and her frail condition the Doctor felt that she would not have a very good chance at surviving the surgery.

The family then had to make the choice to either take their chances with an operation or to keep her at home and keep her as comfortable as possible.

They decided to keep her at home and try to help her stay comfortable.

We are providing the pain medication for her and some nutrients.

If anyone would like to contribute towards helping buy painkillers and nutrients for Dona Juana, please send your donation to our "Medical Fund" and mark on it for the attention of Dona Juana.

This family is very, very poor and they cannot afford to supply their mother with medication, any help towards her care would be greatly appreciated.

VISITING THEIR SPONSORED CHILDREN:

Cheree and her mother Joanne, made a quick trip to Panajachel to visit their sponsored children.  The children were fascinated and thrilled by the wooden train set that they brought with them.  Thanks, Cheree and Joanne, it was lovely to meet you!

CHRISTMAS WRAPPING!

The Christmas wrapping continues!   The women from San Jorge women's

group have been here for three days helping wrap all the presents for their Christmas Party on the 17th of December.  Nearly 3,000 toys have been wrapped and will be given out in several different locations. San Jorge, Tierra Linda, Panajachel, Solola and we are hoping that we will

have enough for Panabaj.   Thank you to everyone who sent toys to make

this Christmas a very happy one for many children who otherwise would not be receiving a toy.

Feliz Navidad!!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
THE BOXES BEING UNPACKED.

We had a goal this year of 3,000 toys and with lots and lots of help from our fabulous support group - mayanfamiliesconnection@yahoogroups.com in the U.S. and from many people coming down and carrying small bags of toys for us - all these small bags of toys really add up!  - we have now met our goal and will be able to give out more toys than we have ever done before.

The Mayan Families Connection group collected toys for months to be

able to send down the "Santa Shipment" of 14 huge boxes.   When we

opened these boxes you could feel the love that had gone into collecting, sorting, packing and sending all these toys!

If you would like to participate for next year please contact mayanfamiliesconnection@yahoogroups.com .....they will be happy to hear from you!

NOVEMBER 29, 2007: CHICKEN PROJECT!

Thanks to the wonderful "Clucks for Bucks" (US ) and "Henny Penny " (Canada) projects we have been able to give out 10 chickens to 20 women each month.

These were the very happy recipients of this month's Chicken project.

Thank you everyone who has donated money to be able to buy chickens for this project!
