This is the next page I will be working on because we are trying to expand the Family Sponsorship Project!
INDIVIDUAL FAMILY SPONSORSHIP:
We have been working with many families here and have identified some that are in desperate need of continual assistance:
FIRST FAMILY:
One is a family consisting of a single mother, who is HIV/AIDS positive. She was diagnosed just before the birth of her 18 month old daughter, who is also positive. She has four other children, Samuel 13yrs old who is the only person bringing in a wage to the family. He is working in the river with occasional help from his 10yr old brother, Diego. They sift sand and sell sand to the construction companies. He is bringing home about Q70 ($9us.) a week. Alejandra is 8 yrs old and Jacqueline is 6 yrs old. They are paying Q350 ($47) a month rent. The Mother can occasionally find work washing clothes and we have given her some chickens to breed. Unfortunately, many people in the town are aware of her medical condition and it is impossible for her to get employment. We sponsor the children to go to school and occasionally through donations can help them with their rent and food. Quite often this family has no food in the house and no gas-propane to be able to cook. Paying the rent is a struggle, they are always two or more months behind. The Mother is an orphan, she is quite alone and has no extended family to help her at all. She needs at least Q100 ($13) a week to be able to afford to feed her family.
SECOND FAMILY:
This is another single mother who is suffering Tuberculosis. She does not speak Spanish, only her native language of Kaqchikel and due to her poor health cannot work. Her son, who is 15 yrs old, works in a Bakery from 6pm at night until 5am, he then goes home, sleeps and goes to school at 1p.m. He makes Q20 ($2.60us.) a night for his work. She has two other children, one 10yrs old and one 6yrs old. She is renting a room in a two room mud brick dwelling, the other room is occupied by her adult daughter, who is also a single mother with 4 children. Together they pay Q350 ($46) a month. Recently, we received a donation to pay for her electricity to be turned back on. They had been without electricity for three months because they could not pay the bill. We also bought her two beds until then the family had been sleeping on mats on the dirt floor.
They had no food in the house the last time we were there, so we bought them a supply of staples for the week. Unfortunately, we do not have funds available to do this very often.
All the children and the mother make woven wristbands which they sell to a store. They make about $6us for a weeks work on these wristbands.
They are in need of donations to help with their rent, electricity and food. Because the mother has Tuberculosis she is not supposed to cook over an open fire. But due to lack of money they cannot often afford to fill the gas tank for their small stove. To fill the tank it costs $13 per tank. That would probably last them a month. Q100 ($13us) would help them to be able to have food to eat.
THIRD FAMILY:
An impoverished family with six children living in San Jorge are struggling with the father having Parkinson’s Disease. The father needs medicine to help control the spasms that he is suffering. Unfortunately, they cannot afford to buy the medicine. It costs $44us. a month. We are sponsoring two of their children to go to school. They need help to buy the medicine and food.
FOURTH FAMILY:
A married couple with two children are trying to cope with the horrible reality that the wife and the 11 month old daughter are HIV/AIDS positive. The husband and the 5 year old son are negative. They are receiving monthly medicine that is vital to both the mother and the daughter but sometimes when they go to the hospital, they are out of the specialized medicine for them. Then they have to purchase it at a pharmacy and it costs Q700 ($93 a month).
This is only an occasional need for them but it is extremely important to the health of both the mother and the daughter. The mother and the children have had to move to another town because of the discrimination she has faced here. The father continues to work in this town and travels two or three times a week to be with his family. The family also has to travel to the city once a month which puts a huge strain on their budget.
They need a financial donation to be able to keep in reserve for when the medicine is not available.
