The father works as a day laborer - he earns $3 US per day.  He speaks a little Spanish. His language is Tzutujil.  He went to school only until 2nd grade. He can only read and write a little.

  

The mother does not work outside the house. She stays at home looking after the children. She does not speak Spanish at all. She did not go to school. She does not know how to read or write.

She is also very malnourished and is in bad health.

 

The emergency shelter is a wooden structure with a tent like covering.

Isaac is 15yrs old. He only went to school till 3rd grade. He is now working in Puerto de San Jose, approx. 3 hours away. He is a day laborer. He earns $32 US per week.  He has to pay his rent and food in Puerto de San Jose but he comes each week end and gives his mother a small amount of money for food.

 

His littlest brother is  2yrs old. He is very malnourished. We have sent the mother and the baby to the doctor and we are now supplying the mother with milk to give to the baby.

 

The mother Magdalena, works washing clothes by hand in private houses.

She earns $2. US. per day and she can usually find work three days a week.

This is not enough money to keep the family fed and clothed.

 

This family were victims of Hurricane Stan which caused massive mud slides in their village. 763 people died.  This family lost their home and all their possessions.

One month before the Hurricane hit the father died of the results of alcoholism.

 

They are now living in the emergency shelter village. The room they have is made of a wooden structure with heavy duty plastic siding. The roof is tin sheeting. The floor is dirt. The roof allows a lot of cold air and dirt to come in.
