Anabelyl is 8yrs old. She lives in Panabaj, a village of Santiago Atitlan.
She will be going into 2nd grade in January, 2008.
She lives with her grandparents and her brother, Vincente, 9yrs old.
He will be going into 3rd grade in January, 2008.
They live with their grandparents. This family was a victim of Hurricane Stan in 2005. Both their parents died in the mudslides along with three more siblings. They were all sleeping with their parents in one room when the mudslide happened. Anabely and her brother, Vincente survived because they were sleeping in another room with the grandparents.
They are still living in an emergency shelter. They are living in a wooden structure that is covered by plastic. It is open at the top so it lets all the wind and rain in. The floor is dirt. Over 250 people died in the mudslides and many, many are still living in the emergency shelters. They are waiting for the government to help them relocate the village. But this may take another two years to do.
The grandfather, Vincente, 61yrs old is blind. The grandmother, Ana is 56yrs old. The grandmother does not work because she has to look after the children and her husband. They have a married son who helps them, he collects firewood for them and gives them a little money. But he is very poor and the money is really not enough just to keep his own family alive. The day we visited his baby was wrapped in just a cloth, they had nothing for the baby and it was very dirty.
They have an Onil stove.
They have a water filter but it is unusable because they have not been able to replace the filters. They have now had the filter more than two years.
They have two beds that were given to them after the Hurricane.
They do not have a closet. They keep all their clothes in a cardboard box.

Anabely was wearing traditional clothing before the mudslides but all her clothing was buried along with their house. These clothes have been given to her. If she had the possibility of having traditional clothing she would be wearing it.
