Many impoverished people in the Guatemalan Highlands can only afford to live in mud brick shacks with little or no real protection from the elements. These are often single parent families.
Some villages consist of little more than corn fields and a church. Often, these villages have children who travel long distances to get to the nearest school, if that school will even accept them. Such villages cannot afford to build their own schools.
Community leadership in the poorer villages often comes through organized groups (usually women) who encourage education, community activities, and whatever they can to bring health, nutrition, and prosperity to their villages. However, they are not able to afford community amenities such as gathering centers, housing for clinics, well-maintained public laundries, and the like.

The Mayan Families Construction Program has completed numerous projects to help poor schools. We have built classrooms, restrooms, repaired roofs to keep out the heavy rains and reduce heat in the classrooms, added windows to brighten the classrooms, and other important amenities to create for better learning environments.
We often discover homeless families victimized by extraordinary circumstances. In many of these cases, Mayan Families has purchased land, built a home and ensured that the family can not be "evicted" by other family members. We also make needed home improvements to bring basic comforts like bathrooms, kitchens, concrete or wood flooring as opposed to dirt, and conveniences for the handicapped.
We have purchased land and taken on the construction of public learning centers for community gatherings, education, medical and veterinarian clinics, and distribution of donation items.

If you would like your donation to be directed towards a specific project then send a message to specialproject@mayanfamilies.org to alert our construction team.
