We distribute energy efficient Onil stoves to the Maya of Guatemala

Fuel Efficient Stoves Program

The indigenous people of the Guatemalan Highlands use wood for cooking. Their kitchens are usually small outside structures with dangerous open fire pits. Kitchens typically do not provide for smoke ventilation. After food, firewood is the largest expense for families who are unable to gather it themselves. They typically pay 5 days wages per month for a supply of firewood which lasts less than one month.

What the Stoves Program Does

Mayan Families provides needy families with fuel-efficient wood stoves that have financial, health, and environmental benefits. The stoves which we deliver and install are 70% more fuel efficient than traditional open-fire methods. Through our hundreds of installations, we have observed significant reductions of monthly firewood expenses, reduced incidents of respiratory ailments, as well as reduced deforestation impacts. Forestation is very important in the Guatemalan Highlands to minimize fatalities caused by mudslides.

We have found Onil stoves to be more effective than solar or other alternative solutions for the local environment. We purchase the stoves by the truckload to get the best prices.

In addition, these stoves are safe. As a result of this successful Program started in 2006, we have seen significant reductions in burn cases (especially to children), as well as reductions in respiratory diseases through greatly improved smoke ventilation features.

How You Can Help the Stoves Program

A contribution of $2,700 will enable us to purchase a truckload of stoves and concrete blocks for 20 needy families.

A contribution of $140 will enable us to purchase, deliver, and install a stove for a single family.

Please select the Contribute button. All contributions of any amount are gratefully accepted and will be used only for this Program.

If you would like your contribution to go towards someone special, then send a message to personaldonation@mayanfamilies.org after you have completed your payment. This will alert our distribution team.
