Children with disabilities are among the most marginalized and vulnerable populations in rural Guatemala. As many families in rural Guatemala live below the poverty line, the additional costs of specialized care are prohibitively high. Children with disabilities are the least likely to attend school and to have access to medical services. Inaccessible public infrastructure, cultural attitudes towards those with disabilities, and a lack of financial assistance from the government all contribute to their exclusion.
Mayan Families’ Children with Special Needs Program provides children with disabilities access to education, health and rehabilitation services, and a shared educational and recreational space that contributes to individual empowerment.
We partner with special needs schools and rehabilitation centers in the Lake Atitlán region to foster the inclusion of children with disabilities within our community development efforts.
Donate to our Children with Special Needs Fund to support these children’s education, health and self-empowerment.
