SANDRA'S STORY: FROM SPONSORED STUDENT TO EDUCATION DIRECTOR
Mayan Families is honored to have several people on our staff who have been with us from the very beginning. They have helped make Mayan Families what it is today. We were able to help support them and facilitate student sponsorships, and now many are working with us in our office to help further our mission to help those who truly need it.
Read Sandra's story below...
I’ve been with Mayan Families even before there was a Mayan Families and I truly believe I would not be where I am in my life without this organization. I met Sharon when I was five years old and she changed my life forever.
My family could not afford for me to go to elementary school, so at the age of twelve, I had to start washing dishes in a local restaurant to earn some money. Sadly, this couldn’t cover all the costs, so I had to stop going and stay home with my single mother. In 2001, Sharon helped to arrange for a sponsorship for me so I could continue my education – even before Mayan Families existed! I was lucky enough to finish High School and graduated last year from University.
Throughout my schooling, I tried to help within Mayan Families in any way I could as it began to grow. When the Education Department was established five years ago, I was offered the job of Director of it and couldn’t have been more thrilled. I have a passion for education and am so grateful that I can give back to the community.
I love my job and am honored I can help kids have a chance at education and success. I hope to eventually complete a Master’s Degree in Social Work so that I can help even more. I also hope to stay with Mayan Families for many more years and keep contributing to its growth.
Please consider contributing to our Preschool General Fund so that we can continue to give children the priceless gift of knowledge.
