Generous Donations Made in Honor of Oregon Wedding
Often tribute gifts tend to hold more meaning than material ones. We were joyed this month to see that Amy and Holly of Oregon requested that their guests give donations to Mayan Families in place of wedding gifts on their special day. Read their touching story below:
“We wanted to ask for donations because Guatemala and Mayan Families are very dear to us. In December of 2001, we welcome home our two oldest children whom we adopted from Guatemala. Kevin was two years old at the time and Ana was just one and a half. We left part of our hearts in Guatemala when we flew home and have always wanted to give back to this beautiful, but impoverished, country ever since. When I found Mayan Families, I felt confident that the work you do is of highest ethical standards and that my money would really go to Mayan communities. We have sponsored a student for several years and donated to various projects as often as we can.”
After fourteen years of being in a domestic partnership, Oregon finally made gay marriage legal, and Amy and I decided to get married. While gifts are fun, we really don’t need anything and knew that it would be far more meaningful to share our blessing with the communities that Mayan Families supports. We asked all of our invited guests to honor us with a donation to Mayan Families instead of gifts. We were thrilled to learn that we had raised over $200!”
If you are interested in donating on someone’s behalf, whether it be in place of a gift or a simple act of kindness, be sure to specify in the “NOTES” section when making a donation.
