The Women’s Health Initiative is a program focused on both cervical cancer screening - the most fatal cancer for women in Guatemala - and reproductive health education. Many women, especially in the highlands region of Guatemala, do not have access to women’s health education and services due to cultural, economic, and medical factors. Mayan Families provides educational workshops led by professionals from the community in both Spanish and Kaqchikel, and regular cervical cancer screenings to all women. Through medical services and increased awareness, the Women’s Health Initiative aims to break down the barriers that many women face when attempting to access reproductive health information and services, enabling them to make informed decisions about their own wellbeing, and pass the knowledge on to their families and community.
