Our sponsors do so much to support the education of their students, and we encourage all of our donors to come see all of the work we do in person! Coming to visit Guatemala and seeing what Mayan Families does firsthand is an amazing and rewarding experience, and is a wonderful opportunity to create a special relationship between sponsors and their sponsored students. We have various options for groups, volunteers, and visiting donors to get involved with us during trips down to Panajachel.
Depending on your goals and trip plans, you are welcome to plan a visit on its own or combine visits with other group or volunteer activities. We offer packages and activities specifically designed for groups and can include sponsor visits in your schedule of activities.
Mayan Families’ staff will accompany all visitors and provide guidance on cultural norms and expectations in order to ensure a positive experience for everyone. This is a great opportunity to learn about the local community and to ask questions about your trip and how you can create the most positive relationships with local people, including your sponsored student!
Visits with Sponsored Students and their families
All visitors will be accompanied by an English-Spanish translator, a Spanish-Kakchiquel translator, a photographer, and driver (if the visit is outside of the office). It’s a good idea to keep in mind that this area has different norms and standards from what you may be used to, so we ask that visitors dress conservatively and act in a respectful and appropriate manner at all times, including asking permission before taking photos. It can often take some time to set up for visits and often activities and visits run late, so we thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.
When planning your visits, it is also best to let us know at least a month in advance so that we can make sure you have the best experience possible! Please also feel free to contact email@example.com with any questions or concerns about your sponsorship or upcoming visit.
